From the Prez April 2018

Welcome, Magic City Blues Society people, to the Latest and Greatest “version” of the Magic City Blues Society’s monthly newsletter and update. As you can tell, the Board, led by Rebecca Haack, Roger Stephenson, and Todd Eckstrom, has been working on the new MCBS website and the methods that we use to communicate to the membership.

So it’s still a work in progress – as we become more familiar with the new website and software things are bound to change. One of the major initiatives we’re working on is granting access to the calendar to all of our member musicians and venues. I need to thank Mona Lee, again, for the months and months of work she did putting the calendar together every month. Mona would initiate contact with about 75 different musicians and venues every month! But going forward, we anticipate letting those musicians and venues post their own dates – stay tuned for specific updates on our progress there!

As usual, things really pick up in April with the warmer weather. We have three signature events this month. First, Quon Willis makes a

return visit for a BlueStages show on April 8. If you are new to us, send an email to bluestages@att.net to
reserve your seat. On April 22, we start another year of our FREE Phelan Park shows with Elaine Hudson Campbell and the Force of Nature Band. Bring a chair and a cooler with your favorite beverages and enjoy an afternoon of tunes.

And on April 28 the MCBS will act as an official sponsor of the Bob Sykes Bar BQ and Blues Festival at DeBardeleben Park in Bessemer.  Artists include the Debbie Bond Band, the MusicMaker Relief All Star Band, the Chris Simmons Band, Lightnin’ Malcolm, Jeff Jensen, and Johnny Rawls. It’s an awfully fun day at a beautiful venue – I hope to see 100’s of you out there.

Some other local events worth noting: Debbie Bond will be at the Red Wolf on April 7; the North Mississippi All Stars are coming to the Avondale Brewery on Friday April 13th; and Gina “Misty Blue” Coleman will be at the Red Wolf on April 14th

So... lots happening! Get out and enjoy some blues!
